The Brownwood Police Department's Communications Division consists of the following personnel when at full strength:
One Communications Supervisor
Fourteen Communication Officers
Two Communication Assistants / Non Emergency Call Takers |

| The personnel are broken up amongst different shifts as determined by the Communications Supervisor, to cover a 24 hour period. |

| The Communication Officer's responsibilities are enormous. They provide call taking and dispatching for the Brownwood Police Department, Early Police Department, Bangs Police Department, Brown County Sheriff's Department, all Brown County Constables, Brownwood Fire Department, and all the volunteer fire departments within Brown County. As can be imagined, the Communications Officer must be able to handle working in very fast paced, stressful, and hectic environment. |

| The duties of the communication division include, but are not limited to, the following: |
| 1. |
Operates telephone system in receiving and transferring calls. Receives emergency calls from often times hysterical or highly stressed subjects who have been victimized. |
| 2. |
Records information necessary for Patrol response; i.e., accurate address/location, phone number, other information necessary to responding units; i.e., descriptions, any weapons involved, ongoing account of critical activities, etc. |
| 3. |
Frequent radio communications with deputies, at times during stressful situations such as pursuits or other emergency responses. |
| 4. |
Operating TCIC/NCIC computer terminals, sending and receiving teletype messages through the system, routing teletype messages to proper personnel. Enters and removes stolen property from TCIC/NCIC. Performs warrant checks and sends confirmation messages on wanted subjects. |
| 5. |
Operates departmental CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) system. |
| 6. |
Assists/directs public walk-ins, controls electronically locked entrance doors to the law enforcement center. |
| 7. |
Frequently contacts a wide variety of other public service agencies within the city and county while forwarding information or requesting specialized assistance. |
